What is Sensex?

Sensex is the indicator of how indian stock market is performing. It is tied to the BSE (Bombay Stock Exchange).

It is calculated on the basis of 30 blue chip companies in India.
Here is the list of 30 companies that make up sensex.
  1. Oil and Gas - RIL, GAIL, ONGC, NTPC
  2. IT - Infosys, Wipro, TCS
  3. Banking Sector - Axis bank, SBI, ICICI bank, HDFC bank, Housing development finance
  4. Auto - Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors, Bajaj Auto, Hero Motocorp, Mahindra and Mahindra
  5. Engineering - L&T, Bharat heavy electricals
  6. Telecommunication - Bharati Airtel
  7. Pharma - Reddy, Cipla, Lupin, Sun pharma
  8. FMCG - HUL, ITC
  9. Metal Sector - Coal India, Tata steel, Hindalco, Vedanta
As of 30 Aug 2015, the sensex value is 26392. This value keeps on changing as shares of the above
companies are traded on the stock exchange. Many companies provide stock market data on their websites like Bloomberg, Reuter.
