The full form of FSI is Floor space index. It is used to indicate how much area you can build in a plot of given size. FSI is also called as Plot ratio or Floor area ratio.
FSI = Total floor area / plot area
So if you have built 2 story building with 4 flats of 500 sq ft each on the plot of area 2000 sq. ft, then FSI would be 1. (2000/(500*4)).
FSI is set by government body in each city. There can be different FSI in different parts of the city.
Higher FSI means more construction in given plot. While lower FSI means less construction in given plot.
FSI is usually high in densely populated area like main city area.
