Verbs in English Grammar

Verb is the word in English sentence that denotes the action.

For example -
  1. I work in a software company.
  2. They are eating.
  3. You will go to College.
  4. She was not feeling well.
  5. We drank coffee.
1. Forms of the verb
Verb usually has 4 forms.
  1. Base form           -  eat
  2. Past tense form   -  ate
  3. Past Participle     -  eaten
  4. Gerund or Present participle -  eating
Most of the verbs can be converted into past form and past participle using "ed" at the end of the verb.

For example -
work -> Worked ->Worked
play ->  played   -> played

But there are many verbs that do not follow above rule.
Example of irregular verbs are given below.
  1. eat - ate - eaten
  2. fall - fell -fell
  3. flee - fled -fled
  4. fly - flew - flown
  5. die - died - died
  6. sleep - slept - slept
  7. cry - cried - cried
  8. run - ran -ran
  9. catch - caught - caught
  10. lose - lost - lost
  11. forget - forgot - forgotten
  12. do - did - done
  13. be - was/were - been
  14. begin - began - begun
  15. break - broke - broken
  16. bring - brought - brought
  17. buy - bought - bought
  18. choose - chose - chosen
  19. come - came - come
  20. cost - cost - cost
  21. drive - drove - driven
  22. find - found - found
  23. go - went - gone
  24. have - had - had
  25. hear - heard - heard
  26. hold - held - held
  27. know - knew - known
  28. lead - led - led
  29. let - let - let
  30. lie - lay - lain (to rest)
  31. lie - lied - lied (to say something false)
  32. mean - meant - meant
  33. wear - wore - worn
  34. tear - tore - torn
2. Types of the verb
Verbs can be of below types.
  1. Simple Verbs - work, go
  2. Auxiliary Verbs - to be (is/am/was/were), to have (have/had), 
  3. Modal Verbs - can, may, might, could, shall, should, ought to, will, would, must)
